Sweetheart was dropped off at our place the first week of Dec 09. She was given to me because her owner couldn't feed her. She is supposed to be in foal. I don't think she could have gone many more days without being fed. She was very thin with rain rot and scours from lack of feed.
She has gained some weight since these pics where taken and I have been working with other rescuers to find her a permanent home. Thanks to them and their donations she is on her way to recovery and a better life.
Update 1/06/10: Sweetheart is doing great although she still has a long way to go. Our original plan was to send her to Shari Frederick at Happy Horse Haven a 501(c)(3) but due to the cold, the length of the trip and new space opening up here at our place, Shari and I decided to leave Sweetheart where she's at.
Thank you very much L. Parks for your generous donation to the feed store where I was able to get her the feed she needed and K Canoval for all the hard work you put into finding a place for her. I would also like to thank S. M. London for her $50 donation and the many others that cared enough to offer help and encouragement.
Special thanks to Shari Frederick who was willing to take her in and give her a forever home. We definitely share the same love for all horses and especially the "older" horses like Sweetheart. Please check out this link http://forums.prospero.com/alexbrown/messages?msg=43853.49 on Alex Brown Forum and you can see all the work that was put into helping out this wonderful mare.
According to what ABR member "thedrafthorse" could tell from Sweetheart's tattoo, she may be: Q09654 is Strictly Creative (1987), a chestnut mare described as having a "Star pointed at bottom; cowlick to left at top of eye level" and no other white markings. She was a New Mexico-bred who ran at Ruidoso Downs and Santa Fe... by Dawn of Creation out of Lacutionist (by Elocutionist). Won $48K, and raced (but finished up the track ) in the 1992 SWEETHEART HANDICAP.
I will continue to post pics of her so all can see her progress.
Many thanks to all,
Debbye Talamantez
and
Sweetheart

Update 1/11/2010: Here are a few pics I took of Sweetheart today. It has been very cold for the last few days but she got thru it fine. The bare spots on her hindquarters are being treated for rainrot. She is already starting to re-grow her hair. She still has a long way to go. Look at that sweet face!!!!
Update 2/18/2010: Here is a pic I took the other day of Sweetheart. She is doing good although she still needs to gain a lot of weight.
Update 4/06/2010: These are pics of her I took a couple of weeks ago. She came down with a cold in February and lost most of what she gained. She is back on track but is one of my harder cases. I have moved her to a better pasture and am hoping that this, along with feed, will help her pack on the weight.
Update 4/22/10: Sweetheart has been adopted. Her new home will be is Seguin, TX where he will have access to over 50 acres of coastal and will be a companion to Joe and another gelding.
